Date Published: March 23, 2010

If you have an iPhone or an iPod Touch, here’s one news about songs downloaded from the iTunes Store that might interest you. The world’s biggest music online retailer, iTunes Store, announced they have reached the 10 billion mark for songs sold! While Apple declined what particular song made the 10th billion count, they confirmed it was made on February 24, 2010 at 4:30P.M., Wednesday, which coincidentally is the 55th birthday of Steve Jobs! The buyer of this milestone song download won a $10,000 iTunes gift check from Apple. The lucky purchaser has not been identified publicly but Apple has notified the person.

The launch of the iTunes Store on April 28, 2003 started a new shift for the music industry. Apple can claim to have started the revolution of music distribution. While the sales of music CDs have spiraled down over the years, the iTunes store kept breaking records. Initially created to cater to its iPod customers, iTunes set its first billion song sales in 2006 and by it has already sold 5 billion songs by the end of 2008.

This rapid shift of customers’ preference for buying their music from iTunes store got a further boost last year when Apple decided to get rid of its DRM, FairPlay, copy-protection on songs sold via iTunes Store. This move to the open MP3 standard was gravely opposed by the music industry especially by the R.I.A.A. However, Steve Jobs and company managed to convince record companies and artists alike to try this new DRM-free way of online music selling. By April 7, 2009, almost all of iTunes songs for sale were available without any copy-protection. DRM-free songs retailed for $0.99 each which proved to be a big hit with customers. The introduction of the iconic iPhone and iPod Touch has also contributed significantly to iTunes’ buying population.

Less than a year after Apple went DRM-free, iTunes has sold 10 billion songs and if you calculate the $0.29 cents Apple gets for every song bought from iTunes, that’s $2.9 billion dollars of big-margin profits for Steve Jobs’ company in less than 7 years of selling songs! The iTunes Store made more money than Sony BMG and Warner Music in 2009! If you want to download songs from the iTunes Store, go get yourself an iPhone 3G/3GS. If you have this phone already, we recomend you buy a cheap iPod Touch on sale so you can enjoy all the music you want for a very low price.
