iPhone iOS 4 Free Firmware Update Download for iPhone and iPod Touch
Apple’s new mobile platform iPhone iOS 4 update is now ready for free download. The free iPhone iOS 4 upgrade started rolling out on June 21. This free iPhone iOS 4 firmware update is only for iPhone and iPod Touch owners, iPad owners will have to wait a few more days. No explanation was issued regarding this delay but I believe they are still adding finishing touches for the iPad version. Apple is offering this as a free upgrade for all including iPod Touch users. This update is only compatible with iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS and 2nd-Gen and 3rd-Gen iPod Touch models. Multitasking is however limited to the 3GS model and 3rd-Gen iPod Touch. Previous models do not meet the hardware requirements to run many tasks at once.

To get this update, you need to sync your phone with the iTunes software on your computer. Just connect your phone via USB to iTunes and select the Device name and model from the sidebar and then click Check for Updates on the Summary tab. We suggest you download the free iTunes 9.2 first into your PC then proceed with this upgrade. The iOS 4 is a huge download, coming at 378 MB, and therefore will take time to finish. Take note that even though you have 5Mbps broadband, download speed may get affected by Apple’s servers getting overloaded. Be patient, there are 30 million other iPhone owners who are all excited to get this update. There will be times you will get the timed-out message but don’t worry, it took me just a little over 1.5 hours to finish downloading it.
iOS 4.0 brings more than 100 new features including app switching, folder organization, enhanced email, enterprise support for business, iBooks, and others. Once you got it installed on your phone or iPod Touch, the first thing you will notice is the new look of the icons. The app icons now float over your desktop picture whereas before they were just on a black. My phone’s screen now looks more like a stripped down version of my beloved Mac OS X 10.4 Mac Mini!
