How to Upgrade iPhone 3G to iPhone 3.0 Firmware

Date Published: March 13, 2009

My doctor-friend who owns an iPhone 3G asked this morning how to upgrade his iPhone OS to iPhone 3.0 firmware after reading my post on iPhone 3.0 firmware (OS) Update for the iPhone 3G, which is coming out next week. My friend has not done any update on his iPhone 3G OS yet as of this writing so he’s left uncertain about the steps in updating his iPhone 3G firmware to v3.0.

For those with the same concern, here are the simple steps that Apple provided if you are going to upgrade your iPhone 3G to iPhone 3.0 firmware. You can, by the way, update your iPhone 3.0 firmware via iTunes 8.1 and follows these steps:

  • Connect your iPhone to your computer.
  • When iTunes opens, select your iPhone under Devices in the Source List on the left.
  • In the iPhone Summary pane, click Check for Update.
  • Click Download and Install. Do not disconnect your iPhone until the update has finished (the graphical version of this tutorial is shown below. Click on image to enlarge)

Steps in the iPhone 3G Update to iPhone 3.0 Firmware

I hope this simple tutorial will help everyone looking for info on how to update iPhone 3G OS to iPhone 3.0 firmware. The steps are quite simple really. You just need to know iTunes a bit more to get around this procedure.

However, just a few simple notes. The above steps worked in the last iPhone 3G 2.2.1 update (which also worked with iPod Touch). In dealing with the new iPhone OS 3, we are not really sure if this procedure will work. There are a few things under consideration. Will Apple sell new handsets (hardware) for the iPhone 3.0 firmware to work? Will it support both iPhone 3G and 2G? Will iPhone OS 3 update be free?

Honestly, we are still in the gray area around here. We have not really been very conscious about iPhone firmware upgrades ourselves and we still lack vital info on this subject. We are simply hoping here that the previous steps in doing an iPhone 3G firmware update holds true for the iPhone 3.0 (OS 3) firmware. Of course, we are also hoping the firmware update to be free (as usual) without the need to buy a new iPhone unit/handset :-)

Yes the update is free for iPhone users both 2G and 3G. But for iPod Touch it’s $9.95 I believe.

No you don’t the update will work on any iPhone new or old but on the first generation iPhone some feature won’t be able to work like MMS

This is how you upgrade to iphone OS 3.0 . You need to download the .ipsw file and then shift click on update or preferably restore.

Then use unofficial quickpwn to fake the activation process. Otherwise you would need a dEV LICENCSE

To downgrade stick it in DFU mode and shift click restore > 2.2.1

@ emily.. Hey do one thing download original 3.0 firmware for 3G (not 2G), save it on desktop, now open itunes 8.2, connect iphone when pop-up in itunes, click n go to summary tab, now if u’r using windows, click shift+restore, when opens browsing window browse through the firmware you downloaded. open it, seat back n relax. let itunes do everything.

Hope this work out, let me know at kandarp003@gmail.com if not.
