Unlocked iPhone 3G in the Philippines Would Be Better for Cell Phone Users
The iPhone 3G in the Philippines is exclusively distributed by Globe Telecom through post-paid plans. This means that iPhone 3G in the Philippines are not unlocked to avail of other services offered by other networks like Smart Telecoms and Sun Cellular. Cell phone buyers do not have a choice but to give in to Globe Telecom’s rates if they buy an iPhone 3G in the Philippines. However, there is a huge possibility that unlocked iPhone 3G mobile phone units could be sold in the Philippines in the near future. Here are the reasons why:
First, Apple has started selling unlocked models of its popular iPhone 3G in Hong Kong which allow users the freedom to select the telecoms provider of their choice.
The eight gigabyte version was on sale Saturday at Apple’s online store for 5,400 Hong Kong dollars (about 700 US dollars), while the 16 gigabyte model was 6,200 dollars. Apple said the phone can be activated with any wireless carrier.
In view of this, since Asian countries like Hong Kong and the Philippines are some of the biggest markets of cell phones, there is a huge possibility that open line cell phones like unlocked iPhone 3G units could be sold in the Philippines based on the latest move of Apple in Hong Kong. There is no guarantee that this will happen but limiting the iPhone 3G to a single network in the Philippines is not a good business strategy in my opinion.
Also, many iPhone 3G users and enthusiasts are not happy with Globe Telecom’s plans because they are expensive. Soon, the dissatisfaction of cell phone buyers will take its toll on the sales of the iPhone 3G and Globe Telecom’s post-paid plans. I will post more iPhone 3G updates soon. iPhone 3G Plans of Globe Telecom will also be published later.
