Notepad is a simple text editor available in Microsoft Windows since version 1.0, released on 20 November 1985 and stayed on all versions of Windows Operating Systems we have used (Windows 3.1, 95, 97, XP, Vista) up to Windows 7. Surprisingly, Windows Notepad has not changed that much since its inclusion in the Windows Operating System. Notepad terribly lacks a lot of essential functions and new features are highly anticipated to be included in every major Windows releases and updates but only to find nothing. Notepad almost did not make it to Vista and the need for a better text editor among programmers and coders are evident.
So , instead of waiting for Microsoft to beef up Notepad, I searched the Net for a better text editor. I have come across a myriad of them, some are free (GNU), freewares and a lot are sharewares. I tried and tested each and found what I just needed. Let’s see why PSPad Editor is a very good free software to replace your antiquated Notepad text editor:
PSPad comes with a hex editor, CP conversion, text differences, templates, macros, spellcheck option, auto-completion, Code Explorer and much more. The program is pre-configured for the most popular programming languages (VB, C++, SQL, PHP, ASP, Python etc.) and you can further customize the syntax settings. PSPad includes several additional tools that are especially useful for HTML editing (compress, format code) and also integrates TopStyle Lite and TidyHTML. The program can be used as IDE for any compiler. Additional features include support for project, file browsing, custom shortcuts, built-in FTP client to edit files on the server and much more.
You can download for free the current stable release of PSPad Freeware Editor which is version 4.5.4 (2356) July 12, 2009 but for the later version (4.5.5 (2370) – English only Beta version), you can download at the developer’s forum with the following changes, FYI:

- FTP client – ‘..’ is available always
- HTML preview – refresh after file save
- Progress code explorer – added Temp table structure support
- ABB rapid Code explorer – added Traps support
- Updated JCL library – processor and OS detection e.t.c.
- Progress highlighter – added new keywords
- Program remembers Code clips window size during sessions
- Remove file from project (Shift+Ctrl+Del) is available only if project Window is focused
Corrections
- Open files from internet history wasn’t stored
- Handled exception is file was closed on background
- FTP client – movement using arrows
- Switch to HEX when whole text was selected and file type was different from DOS
- Open Text files from project with double click
- File change detection
- FTP – random command can’t be switched off
The update comes with PSPad executable and language files only in a CAB file which is to be unpacked with subfolders and replace existing files from the last full release (4.5.4 – 2356). Be sure to check their forum first before upgrading to the latest release. This is to ensure that the new software is properly tested. Also read the warnings from the software creators to ensure compatibility with your existing operating systems. It can be installed in laptops of desktop PCs that run any Windows OS.
