Samsung Galaxy S i9000 Android Phone: Its 1GHz Hummingbird Processor is Faster than Qualcomm SnapDragon
Americans didn’t seem to notice that Samsung’s most powerful Android handset was launched a few weeks ago in Europe. While US consumers went all gaga over Sprint’s HTC EVO 4G’s launch party last June 3, Vodafone UK did a subdued unveiling of the Samsung Galaxy S i9000 last June 15. Surprisingly, customers in the UK got the better deal because they were able to get this phone for free when they signed up for a 2-year contract (£35/month) with Vodafone! Except for the lack of 4G connectivity, I believe the Galaxy S i9000 is a better phone than the Sprint HTC EVO 4G or Nexus One android phone by Google. No offense meant, of course.
No doubt about it, the Samsung Galaxy S i9000 is one of the most anticipated Android phones this year. It has the unique feature of having a large 4.0-inch super AMOLED screen that compliments its super fast 1 GHz custom processor and 512MB RAM. I would like to emphasize that the Galaxy S i9000’s processor is not the Snapdragon from Qualcomm like what’s found on the HTC EVO 4G, Nexus One, and HTC Incredible. Samsung decided to forego using another firm’s CPU and used their special S5PC110 processor (codenamed the “Hummingbird”) that has the same 1GHz clock speed with that of the SnapDragon but it can process 90 million triangles per second of operations. This is almost 4x higher than that of Qualcomm’s product which can only perform at a maximum of 22 million triangles per second.
Samsung said the Hummingbird’s superior score is courtesy of the embedded PowerVR SGX 3D graphics engine. While users will hardly notice the speed difference in their ordinary tasks, the Galaxy S i9000 will perform a lot better than its SnapDragon-equipped rivals when it comes to gaming and other CPU-intensive applications. If this claim is to be believed, then the Galaxy S can even outperform Apple’s A4 chip that now powers the iPad and iPhone 4. The only other serious rival I can think of now is Verizon’s Motorola Droid X which is also getting a lot of positive reviews even though its not yet ready for release until July 15.
US citizens will experience the power of Samsung Galaxy S i9000 with Android 2.1 soon. Release date for the Galaxy S i900 has not been confirmed yet but we will update everyone when the info becomes available. The web is ripe with rumors that AT&T or T-Mobile will bring this wonder phone to the American market by next month. If deals get finalized, the Galaxy S will be available for purchase by end of July or early August. Samsung has clearly stated that they are intent on bringing their best Android product to the States to compete with HTC’s products. The Korean firm says they will likely offer the Samsung Galaxy S i9000 Android phone to American customers under a new brand name to separate it from the European and Asian version. We heard some US wireless carriers will name it either Captivate or Vibrant.
