LG W990 Mobile Phone with Intel Moorestown Chip is First in the World

Intel’s Keynote presentation at CES 2010 had the LG W990 mobile phone as the star example of Intel’s bid to sell its Moorestown platform for next-gen smartphones. LG W990 looks very much like the new LG Chocolate BL40 and BL20v models and Moorestown is being predicted to break Qualcomm’s majority share of smart phone processors. Intel’s Atom processors have become the industry standard for netbooks and small laptops. The microchip giant is aiming to achieve this feat again on the smart phone segment. Compared with the LG Projector Phone review, we’re inclined to give this a bit higher rating for having a very powerful chipset.

LG W990 Smartphone Equipped with Intel Moorestown Chip

For the AT&T LG Expo Projector phone (LG Expo GW820 Mobile Phone), the device is powered by Windows Mobile 6.5 OS. We do not know what chip it is using but Moorestown – LG W990′s chip – is built on Atom-based architecture but with 20x more power efficiency. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 1 GHZ processor is currently the world’s most powerful smartphone engine and it is what powers Google Nexus One and the upcoming Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, which is equipped with Face Recognition software. Intel declined to divulge the specifif clock speed of LG W990 Moorestown chip but analysts are saying it might be near Atom’s 1.6 Ghz. That will make it 60% faster than Qualcomm’s Snapdragon. With this kind of power, the LG W990 is going to be a super multi-tasking beast. It will effortlessly run graphics heavy apps and play full HD videos in a snap.

Intel has officially admitted that they view the LG W990 smartphone as the “new mobile computer of the future“. The giant increase in broadband speed has practically made the smartphone the world’s favorite device for staying connected online, enjoying entertainment, doing personal communication and as an essential business tool.

The LG W990 release date is scheduled this first half of 2010. The LG W990 mobile phone demo unit unveiled at CES 2010 was noticeably bigger and thicker than other established smart phone brands. It was estimated to be 6 inches long and 2.5 inches thick. This might prove to be major turn-off, customers especially women prefers smaller, thinner and lighter mobile phones. Intel however clarified that the LG W990’s demo unit was not yet final. Price of LG W990 smartphone and other technical specifications might also change before its release date to the US, Canada and European markets. Let’s wait and see what more features can LG W990 offer us. We’ll publish our full review of this phone when the right time comes.
