HTC Smart: High-Tech Phone Release Date, Features and Specs

Date Published: February 25, 2010

HTC Smart is being marketed as a smartphone everyone who loves high-tech gadgets should watch out for. HTC, the Taiwanese company that manufactures the Nexus One Google Phone used the CES 2010 at Las Vegas this year to announce that it will be making and selling a low-priced touch screen phone called Smart. The demo unit of this HTC Smart certainly looked sexy enough to rival the iPhone aesthetic-wise. Here are some pictures of the beta model of HTC Smart. It certainly doesn’t look like those cheap Chinese smartphone clones that populate eBay and other online stores, including phone sellers in malls (offline). To my surprise, HTC Smart phone exudes an aura of elegance and sophistication.

HTC Smart sure is an eye candy phone that will appeal to students and lowly paid employees. HTC is proving itself not only to be a competent smart phone maker but also as design innovator. HTC is probably doing this in an effort to outsell other smartphone makers by selling a mass-market version of its popular HTC smartphones.

The HTC Smart demo model displayed by HTC at CES 2010 packs decent specs. It will be powered by a 300 mhz processor and will have 256MB of RAM and 256MB of ROM. It will be fast enough to run smart phone apps that can run on Qualcomm’s BREW platform. AT&T announced it already that they will be pushing for app programs for low an mid-market smartphones. This will inspire more smartphone manufactures to create low-priced models of their offerings. Cost of owning a smartphone these days is still high, we admit.

Do not expect the HTC Smart to be as fast as the Sprint HTC Hero Android phone or the Unlocked HTC Touch Pro 2, I don’t think it will be able to run multiple apps simultaneously like the handsets mentioned above. Nevertheless, this smartphone for the budget-conscious will still be packed with the useful adornments. It will have microSD slot, Bluetooth 2.0 with ADR and A2DP, mini-USB, 3 megapixel photo and video camera with flash. This phone is still pocket worthy since it only measures 4.09 x 2.17 x 0.50 inches and weighs 108 grams. We suspect this mobile phone is going to be sold unlocked or sim-less, common to mobile phones sold in Asian countries like the Philippines, China, Malaysia and Singapore. US version of HTC Smart may vary but that remains to be seen come release date. Availability of HTC smart could also vary across different regions but don’t worry, everybody will get the chance to buy this item sooner or later.

On the other hand, we’d like to remind you that this handset has some limitations. My only gripe is that this HTC Smart won’t be having WiFi built-in. This is nothing major since Telcos are already offering budget packages that are inclusive with unlimited 3G internet browsing.

HTC will be debuting the Smart in Europe and Asia this Spring 2010 for a very low price. Watch out for the HTC Smart release date in your area so you can begin saving some dough for your possible purchase. For HTC, this is a wise corporate move because Asian countries are the best market for such a low-cost smartphones. I might just buy one if it sells for less than $150 retail without any phone service contract.
