HTC HD2 with Windows Mobile 6.5 OS Not Upgradeable to Windows Phone 7 Series

Date Published: March 30, 2010

T-Mobile has won the exclusive rights to the awesome HTC HD2 Smartphone in the U.S. market. It is about to be launched this March 2010. In fact, an online promo of the T-Mobile HTC HD2 with FREE activation on Amazon is currently offered and will end on March 31, 2010. Unfortunately, the HTC HD2 will still be running on Windows Mobile 6.5 OS. Smartphone customers and reviewers of the HTC HD2 were pissed at Microsoft’s confusing announcement regarding the possibility of upgrading the new HTC HD2 to the Windows Phone 7 Series operating system.

HTC HD2 Smartphone with Windows Mobile 6.5 Operating System

A few weeks ago, journalists asked Microsoft UK Director for Mobile Business Group – Alex Reeve about the likelihood of HTC HD2 being upgraded to Windows Phone 7 OS and he answered,

“It’s early days yet, and that’s really for our hardware partners to think about.”

In direct contrast, General Manager for Microsoft’s Asia Pacific Mobile Communications Business – Natasha Kwan said,

“The 1GHz HTC HD2 doesn’t qualify because it doesn’t have the three buttons required by Windows Phone 7 Series operating system.”

Making the issue more confusing, Microsoft’s Director of Consumer Experiences – Aaron Woodman graciously declined to answer queries about HD2′s upgradability before MIX ’10 (Microsoft’s annual conference for web developers and designers). After the MIX ’10 that was held last March 15-17, 2010 in Las Vegas, the final hardware specs for Windows Phone 7 Series were revealed.

Rumors were confirmed that the newly released HTC HD2 Smartphone by T-Mobile cannot run Windows Phone 7 Series (also known as Window Mobile 7 OS). T-Mobile’s HTC HD2 with Windows Mobile 6.5 OS is not upgradeable to the latest mobile OS by Microsoft because the two are totally different operating systems.

In fact, no current phones can run Windows Phone 7 Series including the lovely HTC HD2 Smartphone because the new operating system by Microsoft has strict hardware requirements. We suggest prospective buyers should be content with purchasing the HTC HD2 with the bundled Windows Mobile 6.5 OS.

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, the HTC HD2 will not be receiving a Windows Phone 7 update.

This was the reply directly from HTC on Oct. 13th. This is in conjunction with not being able to sync with Outlook 2010 64 is a joke as there is incompatibility on Microsoft’s own software and the gall to think we are all going to go out in buy a new phone just a few months after buying a new HD2 just for Win7.

The skumbags at MS … bill gates couldn’t alienate the rest of us … so MS continues to alienate the few of us idiots left that try & try to remail loyal to MS. Is it any wonder folks continue to flock to other browsers & OS’s? What, there wasn’t anothre 100 billion profit seen in fixing 6.5 – so they just throw us in the garbage. Either T-Mobile (who continue to BRAG about their customer service) better put the thumbscrews to MS, or their fan base will be quitting BOTH companies. Screwups like this are why class action causes continue. lol … can you imagine? a phone is made obsolete in less than a year? irony of ironys
