HTC Desire HD Review of Features, Specs and Performance (Second Part)

Date Published: October 2, 2010

This is the second part of my HTC Desire HD review. While HTC Desire HD’s magnifier option was obviously copied from the iPhone 4, they actually have an original innovation on the new Sense UI’s Fast Boot. Previous HTC Android phones took 30 seconds to boot when you press the power button. But with the new Fast Boot, the Desire HD can now boot in 3 seconds! This little trick is akin to a Windows PC doing hibernation mode where in your phone really doesn’t turn off when you press the power button! HTC Sense now also includes a new Restart Button that appears when you press and hold the power button. This is convenient way to kill offending Android apps that won’t just properly shutdown!

The HTC Desire HD now also sports a bigger 8MP camera with Dual-LED flash. It is higher resolution than the iPhone 4. The Desire HD’s camera not only gets auto-focus but also sports a speedy face-detection technology that used to be only found on real digital cameras. HTC said this phone will ship with free photo editing and image effects software. Aside from taking great still pictures, the Desire HD will also be capable of recording 720p HD videos. The microSD slot on this phone will support cards up to 32 gb in size.

HTC Desire HD Review of Performance, Speed and 3D Games

HTC Desire HD Marketed as an Android Phone Designed for Fast Internet Access

My last take will be on the HTC Desire HD’s performance. As per my short experience, the Desire HD is indeed faster now especially when it comes to gaming. The inclusion of a newer and much improved dedicated Adreno 205 GPU makes it more efficient in running 3D games for mobile phones. As per my benchmark tests, the Desire HD can now do 55fps which is at par to the Samsung Galaxy’s performance. The 55 frame rate speed is almost double than what the original HTC Desire could do. At last finally, HTC could claim that their smart phone is now as good as Samsung’s Galaxy S series of phones. For instance, the Samsung Galaxy S i9000 uses a 1 GHz Hummingbird processor and PowerV SGX 3D GPU.

The new Android OS 2.2 Froyo also helps the Desire HD perform faster with apps. Power management is also better with Froyo onboard maybe that’s why HTC decided to just use a 1,350 mAh battery for the Desire HD Android phone model.

As far as I’m concerned, the HTC Desire HD is a very compelling buy for people who want the best features on an Android phone although the price is a bit high. You might want to compare HTC Desire HD with HTC HD7 / HTC HD3 and AT&T HTC Mondrian about pricing and differences in technical specs. These two models run the new Windows Phone 7 operating system.

As to the Desire HD’s User Interface, I can only say that new HTC Sense UI is simply superb! The powerful GPU makes the HTC Desire HD a perfect gaming machine. Add to this the new HTCSense.com where you can remotely wipe out sensitive data should your phone gets stolen or lost and you have the perfect business handset!
