How to Setup WAP by Enabling GPRS and MMS of Smart Cell Phones

Date Published: October 13, 2008


Here is a simple tutorial on how to enable GPRS and MMS of cell phones powered by Smart Telecoms in the Philippines in order for these cell phones to connect to the internet through Wireless Application Protocol (WAP). This setup will work in S60 models of Nokia like Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic (and other Nokia N-Series and E-Series mobile phones). Also, another tutorial on how to configure China-made cell phones to connect to the internet was discussed in the article “Configure Nokia N99i V9+i, Nokia N95 8Gb Clone and Other China Cell Phones to Connect to the Internet” so please read that article if you have China-made clone cell phones.

To enable WAP programatically,

Go to Menu -> Services -> WAP -> Settings -> Edit Profile
Select Smart WAP, Press Activate Profile and Save
Go to Menu -> Messages -> MMS -> Message Settings -> Server Profile
Select Smart MMS, Select Activate Profile and Save
Activate by texting “MMS ON‘ to 3401

If this procedure does not work with your phones, then you have an option to enable WAP by setting up the GPRS and MMS manually using the following steps:

Setup/Enable GPRS

Go to Menu -> Services -> Data Account -> GPRS
Select Smart GPRS
Account Name: “Smart GPRS”
APN: “internet”
Select Smart MMS
Account Name: “Smart MMS”
APN: “mms”
Exit and save settings

Setup/Enable MMS

Go to Menu -> Messages -> MMS -> Message Settings -> Server Profile
Select a Smart MMS, Select Edit Profile
Rename Profile: “Smart MMS”
Homepage: “’http://10.102.061.238:8002”
Data Account: “Smart GPRS”
Connection Type: Select “HTTP”
Proxy Address: Enter “010.102.061.046”
Proxy Port: Enter “8080”
Select Activate Profile

Setup/Enable WAP

Go to Menu -> Services -> WAP -> Settings -> Edit Profile
Select Smart, Select Edit Profile
Rename Profile: “Smart WAP”
Homepage: “http://wap.smart.com.ph”
Data Account: “Smart GPRS”
Connection Type: Select HTTP, Press Ok
Proxy Address: Enter “010.102.061.046”
Proxy Port: Enter “8080”
Select Activate Profile

For cell phones powered by other networks (Globe and Sun Cellular phones), watch out for updates. I will update this as soon as I get the chance to test the settings myself. The steps in setting up cell phones powered by these networks are quite similar to the above-given tutorial except for the unique values required by other networks to allow their subscribers access to their internet services. :-)

    Danielle,

    You can setup the WAP of your Blackberry phone powered by Smart addict mobile by enabling the GPRS and MMS as stated in the tutorial. Just make sure your Blackberry phone has enough load to cover the charges of Smart in enabling these settings. They will charge you with some amount.

    I believe the Nokia N99i made in China is good with vodafone. check your vodafone agent.

    Hi,

    There is no new version for the MMS, GPRS and WAP activation of China-made clone phones. That’s the problem with these units. Most of them do not comply with standards like in activating GPRS, MMS and WAP.

    I think you have to re-install the yahoo messenger in your phone. Try that and see if it fixes your problem. Come back here if doesn’t work.

    Try the tutorial if it works with your Nokia N900. If it does not, then contact your nearest Smart Wireless center and seek help in setting up GPRS and MMS.

    hi! i have a problem with my Blackberry 8100 pearl openline T-mobile. my internet connection is set up both gprs and mms via service book from Smart and able to install the latest opera mini browser problem is my phone only have gsm signal and no gprs or edge telling me that im out of data coverage everytime i browse. data service is on and rarely catches gprs signal not even in makati. i noticed that gateway is blank compared to globe service books that includes gateway ip address. hope you may able to help me thanks in advance

    Does anybody here have Wap settings for Storm 9530? Had no luck getting them from Globe. They told me that they can’t help me because the phone was not purchased through them. Pretty stupid answer to a customer who wants to use your network services.

    I’m a smart network user..and I can’t activate my nokia 2730 classic through my phone..     my brother bought me ideos mobile phone from Japan. the problem is i dont know how to set up its wap connection. its 2.2 android version. 22201003 baseband version. please do email me if you got any idea how to activate my phones internet connection.
