Download Free Kindle App for Mac OS X and Snow Leopard (System Requirements Discussed)
Amazon recently announced they will be offering a free application to the public called “Kindle for Mac.” This free software will let people read content originally meant for the Kindle device on their Mac OS computers. This is an obvious pre-emptive retaliation against Apple’s scheduled April 3 launch for the iPad. Amazon is showing Apple that it can also play very aggressive especially now that some iPad Wi-Fi problems and E-Book incompatibility issues have been identified by users of the iPad.
But still, the iPad is being marketed as a serious e-reader, threatening Kindle’s dominance. Apple started the feud by declaring that their iBookstore will allow book publishers the right to set their own prices which is a direct challenge to Amazon’s long-established $9.99 flat rate for each e-book download for their best-selling Kindle device.
The Kindle for Mac application gives anybody who owns Macintosh running Mac OS X 10.5 or higher to access Amazon’s 450,000 book catalog without the need to buy a Kindle or an iPad for that matter. Amazon’s almost half-a-million library of bestsellers should entice a lot of Mac owners to forego purchasing an e-reader gadget. Prospective customers who only want to use the iPad as a simple device to read digital books will now think twice about buying it. Instead of spending $499 to buy the cheapest iPad, they could spend that money to just buy 50 of their favorite books.
Amazon made the Kindle for Mac software fully compatible with their Kindle device through their Whispersync technology. Meaning you can read all the books you bought through this app on your Kindle and vice-versa. You can even access books you previously bought stored on Amazon’s servers. You can add and synchronize bookmarks and last page read between your Kindle and Mac computer so you can just pick up where you left reading. This software also means you can now read e-books in all their full-color glory. You can adjust font size and number of words per line. The bigger display on Mac laptops and desktops is going to make your Kindle reading a lot more fun.
