Cerebrum 3 Drum Machine VST is best described as a free pattern-based groovebox-style software synth. It’s got 8 drum synth modules and an integrated bassline synth. I use it because I can’t afford to buy a commercial drum machine.
If you ever used Fruity Loops before then you will quickly learn how to create beats on Cerebrum 3. It uses the same technique, it’s got pattern-based tracks where you load in drum kits and you mouse-input the drum patterns manually. See that screenshot above, the layout of the pattern entry is similar to Ableton Live so it’s really easy to create drum beats.
Cerebrum 3 produces excellent analog and synth drum beats and basslines which if you combine with Spicy Guitar, are enough to create songs worthy to sell on iTunes! There’s over 150 drumkit samples that come with this free drum machine and you can load more if you already have some in your computer.
Since this is pattern-based, you can also load in MIDI drum loops if you aren’t satisfied your beat-making abilities. After loading any of the millions of MIDI drum loops available on the web, you can personalize it to your own liking by using Cerebrum’s various randomization features to create a new beat!
If you like doing live generative and evolving music like what Ableton Live can do, Cerebrum 3 is also perfect for live performance. You can create drum beats on 8 tracks and use the Pattern Playlist and Random Probability of Cerebrum 3 to create ever-mutating drum beats and bass lines! You can do this in real-time as long as you got a powerful computer.
The free version of this VST plug-in disables multiple-output but if you pay $49 for the pro version, you can output the 8 drum tracks to multiple outputs. You can then create symphonic drum beats with different multi-band effects, pitch and tones to create a wall of rhythm sound!
