Plants vs Zombies Review: One of the Best Casual Games of 2009
Just like Farmville, we’re expecting Plants vs. Zombies to be (again) one of the best casual games of 2010. Once in a while, computer game coders really do come out with phenomenal games. They get bored churning out clones of old hits and so they’ll come up with something fresh and engaging. One such gem of a game is PopCap’s Plants Vs. Zombies – a truly delightful game for the whole family.
I am voting Plants vs. Zombies as the best casual game for 2009 for several reasons. PopCap turned the old monotonous tower defense strategy genre into something truly outstanding. While other games, like Mafia Wars, have invaded PCs, iPhone 3G/3GS and other smartphones, nothing compares to the originality of Plants Vs. Zombies. This game from PopCap became such a huge hit precisely because it offered a twist of humor and tons of gameplay variety. True it shares the same gameplay associated with tower defense games but no other game can equal Plants vs. Zombies naughty approach. It definitely has a unique charm that appeals to all people, be they casual or hard core gamers.
It tickles me that Instead of using swords, guns or cannons to defend my house from invading Zombies, my garden plans will defend me! This game is so simple but do not underestimate it. I assure you, once you get hooked by Plants Vs. Zombies, you will ignore food, water, bodily functions, and sex just to play some more of this fantastic casual game. This is really one of those addicting video games. Once you play, you’ll find it hard to stop.
The dreaded Zombies are coming near your house. They want to eat your brain. You are a nerd without a gun or car and you can’t call 911. You cannot fight and you cannot escape. All you have as your last line of defense is your garden. Fear not, you have the best armory on earth at your disposal. You got some funny weird plants that can spit bullet seeds, burn, and trap incoming Zombies. Strategic planting of different seeds on your front lawn can stop the zombie onslaught! Be wise in planting your defensive plants. You do not want the zombies having your brain for a snack.
The hook of this game is your need to power level yourself to get new and more powerful seeds. There are 48 types of plants you can have and each time you level up, you get one new plant to slay the zombies with. Such constant rewards will keep you glued to your computer all night long. Plants Vs. Zombies is charming for its variety of game play. In addition to 48 different plants, PopCap also included 26 kinds of zombies. They give so much fun factor to this game. It made me laugh so hard when I saw a dancing zombie drawn like Michael Jackson and Sea Zombies with matching dolphins. These zombies are drawn and animated by artists in total comedy. Unlike other zombie games similar to Nazi Zombies Der Riese that always come off as frightening, the undead of Plants Vs. Zombies are delightful.
While this game is so humorous, it does offer serious strategic game play options. You only have limited inventory so you need to choose the seeds you bring to battle with. Furthermore, fighting is also affected by day and night time. You will have to do some levels at night which limits the available arsenal of plants you can use. I’ll also have to commend PopCap for incorporating mini arcade games within Plants Vs. Zombies. It breaks the monotony and offers a player some much-needed change of play. The soundtrack of Plants Vs. Zombies is captivating and it gets into crescendo madness as more and more zombies invade your front garden.
You really ought to buy this from PopCap’s website. I bet everybody in your family will go ga-ga over it. You can download the demo of Plants vs Zombies just to try it out or buy the full version for only $19.95. However, on iTunes Store, the game is only sold for under $3.00 (for Ipod Touch and iPhone).
