How to Burn ISO (CD Image) Files onto a CD or DVD

A lot of softwares are distributed in CD image files also known as ISO files. As such, there is a need to learn how to burn these ISO files onto a CD or DVD (writable/rewritable ok). Burning softwares can be free, commercials or built-in within the operating system. With this in mind, if you are interested to know how to burn ISO Files onto a CD/DVD using different platforms, then read on.

In Windows 95/98/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista

  1. Download and/or install a burning software like Nero Burning Rom, Nero Burning Essentials or the free image burning software Infra Recorder.
  2. How to Burn ISO file onto a CD/DVD Using Nero Burning ROM/EssentialsInsert a blank CD/DVD into your CD/DVD R/RW drive.
  3. Double-click on the ISO file and click “Burn Image to Disc”.
  4. Choose whether to write the image file onto a CD or DVD.
  5. After the above-given steps have been taken, wait for the burning process to complete. You can also opt-in to Verify Disc Compilation after writing/compiling to make sure the contents of the ISO file are in good condition.

 

In Mac OS X

Note: To burn most ISOs, you can use Apple’s Disk Utility (Disk Copy in older versions).

  1. Launch Disk Utility (Applications ? Utilities ? Disk Utility).
  2. If you see the ISO in the left-hand pane, select it.
  3. Click on the Burn button in the toolbar. (If you did not select the ISO in step two, you’ll be prompted to find it.)
  4. Ensure that the “Verify burned data” checkbox is ticked (you may need to click on the disclosure triangle to see the checkbox).
  5. Click on Burn. The data will be burned and verified.

In Kubuntu

  1. Find the ISO image in the file browser (available at System Menu > Home Folder on bottom of the screen next to KMenu.)
  2. Right click on the ISO ? Actions ? Write CD Image with K3b…
  3. K3b will now automatically verify the md5sum, make sure these match.
  4. Place Blank CD in burner and click on start.
  5. In Xubuntu
  6. Launch the burning tool, xfburn (available at Applications > Accessories > xfburn.)
  7. Choose from the main toolbar, or from the menu Actions the option “Burn CD Image”,
  8. From the Burn CD Image dialog box, click over (None) from “image to burn”, and find the ISO image in the file browser
  9. In the dialog, click ‘Burn Image’.

In Ubuntu

  1. Insert a blank CD into your burner. A “CD/DVD Creator” or “Choose Disc Type” window will pop up. Close this, as we will not be using it.
  2. Browse to the downloaded ISO image in the file browser.
  3. Right click on the ISO image file and choose Write to Disc.
  4. Select the write speed. If you are burning a Ubuntu Live CD, it is recommended that you write at the lowest possible speed.
  5. Start the burning process.
Use a conventional 700Mb capacity CDR for the purpose of compiling ISO files. You may set the speed of your CD/DVD burner (writer/rewriter) to 24X. A 698MB compilation like Linux Ubuntu 8.10 will only take about 5 minutes to write and verify using a Lenovo G410 laptop with 1.5GB of RAM.
