How to Burn ISO (CD Image) Files onto a CD or DVD
A lot of softwares are distributed in CD image files also known as ISO files. As such, there is a need to learn how to burn these ISO files onto a CD or DVD (writable/rewritable ok). Burning softwares can be free, commercials or built-in within the operating system. With this in mind, if you are interested to know how to burn ISO Files onto a CD/DVD using different platforms, then read on.
In Windows 95/98/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista
- Download and/or install a burning software like Nero Burning Rom, Nero Burning Essentials or the free image burning software Infra Recorder.
Insert a blank CD/DVD into your CD/DVD R/RW drive.- Double-click on the ISO file and click “Burn Image to Disc”.
- Choose whether to write the image file onto a CD or DVD.
- After the above-given steps have been taken, wait for the burning process to complete. You can also opt-in to Verify Disc Compilation after writing/compiling to make sure the contents of the ISO file are in good condition.
In Mac OS X
Note: To burn most ISOs, you can use Apple’s Disk Utility (Disk Copy in older versions).
- Launch Disk Utility (Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility).
- If you see the ISO in the left-hand pane, select it.
- Click on the Burn button in the toolbar. (If you did not select the ISO in step two, you’ll be prompted to find it.)
- Ensure that the “Verify burned data” checkbox is ticked (you may need to click on the disclosure triangle to see the checkbox).
- Click on Burn. The data will be burned and verified.
In Kubuntu
- Find the ISO image in the file browser (available at System Menu > Home Folder on bottom of the screen next to KMenu.)
- Right click on the ISO -> Actions -> Write CD Image with K3b…
- K3b will now automatically verify the md5sum, make sure these match.
- Place Blank CD in burner and click on start.
- In Xubuntu
- Launch the burning tool, xfburn (available at Applications > Accessories > xfburn.)
- Choose from the main toolbar, or from the menu Actions the option “Burn CD Image”,
- From the Burn CD Image dialog box, click over (None) from “image to burn”, and find the ISO image in the file browser
- In the dialog, click ‘Burn Image’.
In Ubuntu
- Insert a blank CD into your burner. A “CD/DVD Creator” or “Choose Disc Type” window will pop up. Close this, as we will not be using it.
- Browse to the downloaded ISO image in the file browser.
- Right click on the ISO image file and choose Write to Disc.
- Select the write speed. If you are burning a Ubuntu Live CD, it is recommended that you write at the lowest possible speed.
- Start the burning process.
